Joseph Reuben Simmons, 62, Moscow
Joseph Reuben Simmons of Moscow joined his Lord Jesus after two last smiles on July 20, 2010. He fought a long hard battle with kidney cancer. Joe was born March 28, 1948, in Pine Bluff Arkansas to R. P. and Adele Cook Simmons. He attended Dollarway High School where he played his beloved football.
Joe married his soul mate and best friend, Maggie Myrtle Curtis, on December 23, 1966. He served in the United States Nuclear Navy for six years and then worked his life's career at Nuclear One in Russellville, Arkansas, as one of the first plant operators opening the new power plant in 1973. He volunteered at a free medical clinic in Dardanelle, Arkansas, after retirement. He and his wife moved to Moscow in 2009 to be near his daughter, son-in-law, and two grandsons.
Survivors include his wife, Maggie Curtis Simmons; daughter, Dr. Helen Marie Simmons Shearer and her husband James Allen Shearer and two grandsons, Calvin and Christian Shearer of Moscow, Idaho; son, Daniel David Simmons of Maumelle, Arkansas; his mother, Adele Cook Simmons, brother Tommy Simmons and his wife Lela of Pine Bluff, Arkansas; sister, Pat Walters and her husband Sonny of Little Rock, Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Reuben Simmons, Jr.; his father R. P. Simmons; his paternal grandparents Reuben Perkins Simmons and Daisy Powell Simmons Bonner; and his maternal grandparents, George Brewer Cook and Clora Helen Clabourn Cook.
Above all, Joe loved God and his family. He lived by strong convictions and was an honorable man. He gave his daughter wise advice. He had a quick wit and an amazing sense of humor. He loved watching his grandsons play. He will be loved and missed.
Services will be Saturday July 24, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Shorts Funeral Chapel with Pastor Charles Couch of Real Life Ministries officiating. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery.
